Read Author Amy Liptrot and her son en route to Algeria by sea — A symbolic journey reflecting the residency’s commitment to climate-conscious travel and deep cultural engagement.
In June 2022, as part of the Climate Change Writing Residency, I had the honour of designing and delivering a unique programme in Algeria for acclaimed British author Amy Liptrot, in collaboration with the Algerian Agency for Cultural Fluency, the Ministry of Culture and Arts, and local literary networks. The residency fostered intercultural dialogue on the role of literature in addressing climate change and environmental challenges. To align with the residency’s ecological mission, Amy travelled overland and by sea from West Yorkshire to Algiers with her young son and a carer, supported through accessibility funding.During her stay, she led public talks, engaged in writing workshops with Algerian students, and visited key sites including the Roman ruins of Tipaza and the Kabylie region — areas deeply impacted by climate-driven wildfires.Amy’s reflections were later featured in The Guardian, BBC Radio’s From Our Own Correspondent, and her journey continues to resonate as a model of how writing residencies can spark meaningful exchange and long-term creative impact. 🔗 Read Amy Liptrot’s article in The Guardian 🎧 Listen to her feature on BBC Radio – From Our Own Correspondent
